Substitute Bus Drivers

To be eligible to become a Substitute Bus Driver you must:

  • Complete a Citrus County School Board Substitute Bus Driver application online at www.citrusschool.org. Be sure that all previous employment and personal reference information is complete.
  • Have high school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Have a minimum of five (5) years of licensed driving experience as required by the Department of Motor Vehicles.
  • Have a driving history that meets minimum requirements which includes no DWI, DUI, or DUBAL convictions; not receiving more than 10 points in the previous 3 years; not receiving 5 or more points in the previous year; and no indication of unsafe driving patterns.
  • Submit to and successfully pass a background screening - fingerprints* 
  • Submit to and successfully pass a pre-employment drug screening* 
  • Possess a Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) Endorsements that includes General Knowledge and Air Brakes OR obtain a Permit for a Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) with Air Brakes, Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) Endorsements that includes General Knowledge and Air Brakes prior to starting training and then successfully pass the final CDL examination to obtain the required license upon completion of training. (To obtain a CDL Permit you will need to take a general knowledge written test and written endorsement tests for air brakes, Passenger, and school bus endorsements with the Florida Department of Motor Vehicles Office);
  • Pass a Florida Department of Education Bus Operator Physical examination (no cost);
  • Attend forty hours of unpaid training and possibly additional hours of paid training; and
  • Successfully complete all aspects of the required Bus Operator training and pass the final driving exam.

* Background screening, including fingerprints and drug screening, are paid by the school district for bus driver applicants. If applicants do not work one full year as a bus driver, the applicant will be charged for the full fees of both fingerprinting and drug testing.
