Despite the pandemic, this year’s Citrus Regional Science and Engineering Fair (CRSEF) normally held in person at the Citrus County Auditorium in Inverness, was a success! However, because of safety protocols, students at both at the school and regional level participated virtually.
“I am so proud of these students for participating in the Science Fair, going above and beyond their normal academic curriculum,” says Dr. Mary “Beth” Branch, teacher on special assignment for Science. “Both teachers are students worked very hard to navigating the challenges of a virtual platform.” Grades 6 – 12 completed science projects earlier this school year for fairs held at each of the county’s middle and high schools -- both public and private, Branch said.
This year, Lecanto High School and Crystal River Middle School were the overall school winners for Citrus County. Each school will display a plaque in their main entrance for this honor.
The prestigious Ronald J. Worthington Award for Scientific Excellence was presented to Lecanto High School student Lorelei Mohammadbhoy for her project, Microplastics Still Do Not Promote Gender Equality. The Ronald J. Worthington Award gives $500 for a project deemed to be an excellent representation of the Scientific Research. The award was sponsored by Dr. Robert Brocket and Dr. Rushi Patel from the Citrus Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Center.
The Tim Herndon Plumbing, Innovating the Future Award was presented to Lecanto High School student, Nicole Moran for her project, Prosthetics for Poverty Affected, 2.0 Model. This new $1,000 award was given to a project that demonstrated excellence in engineering and hard work.
This entire event is made possible each year by Dr. Robert Brocket and Dr. Rushi Patel of Citrus Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Center. For more than four years, the Science and Engineering Fair has been sponsored by these generous community donors, along with the Citrus County Education Foundation, Duke Energy and the Rotaries of Citrus County.
We look forward to following and cheering on the 20 students who will represent Citrus County at the Virtual State Science and Engineering Fair at the end of March.
