  1. All full time employees of the Citrus County School Board shall be entitled to and credited with four (4) days of sick leave at the end of the first month of employment (except for any instructional staff member employed on a full-time basis who shall be entitled to four (4) days of sick leave on the beginning date of initial employment for each contract year) as provided by Florida Statutes.  Thereafter, each employee shall accrue one (1) day of sick leave credit for each month of employment which shall be credited at the end of the month.  Such leave is cumulative from year to year without a limit on the number of days that may be accrued, except as limited by statute.  Sick leave shall be taken only when the person is unable to perform his/her duty because of personal illness or illness or death of father, mother, sister, brother, husband, wife, child, or other close relative or member of his/her household.  Any leave charged against accrued sick leave shall be with full compensation.  A claim for sick leave shall be filed in writing with the immediate administrative supervisor within five (5) working days of the employee’s return to duty.  The claim shall set forth the specific days absent and certify that such absence was for personal illness or otherwise allowed under the provisions of this rule.  The claim shall be signed by the claimant certifying that the facts are true and correct.

  2. An employee who has used all accrued sick leave, but is otherwise entitled to sick leave shall be granted said leave without pay.  The claim for such leave shall clearly state that the leave is being requested without compensation.

  3. An application for sick leave due to extended illness shall have attached a statement verifying the illness from a physician, licensed by the state of Florida or from the county health officer, certifying that such leave is essential and indicating the probable duration of the illness and the needed leave.  The Superintendent/designee may require a certification of verification of illness from a physician or the county health officer to support a request for sick leave regardless of the duration of the requested leave.

  4. District employees shall be entitled to transfer sick leave credit from other Florida school districts to the Citrus County School District.  Transferred sick leave shall be in addition to sick leave in which a staff member is entitled from this District.  The transferred leave which is credited to an employee’s account shall not exceed the amount or rate earned during employment in the District.  It is the employee’s responsibility to contact the other school district(s) to request a transfer of sick leave.

  5. If an employee leaves employment in the District and returns to employment in the District without having transferred or used his/her accrued sick leave in another Florida School district, such employee shall be entitled to credit for the previously accrued sick leave upon commencement of re-employment.  Upon retirement and receipt of terminal pay benefits, any unused sick leave shall be forfeited.

  6. An employee applying for Parental Leave has the option of charging any or all of the days of Parental Leave against his/her accrued sick leave.

  7. A District employee may authorize his/her spouse, child, parent, or sibling who is also a District employee to use sick leave that has accrued to the authorizing employee.  The recipient may not use the donated sick leave until all of his/her accrued leave has been depleted, excluding sick leave from a sick leave pool, if the recipient participates in a sick leave pool.  Donated sick leave shall have no terminal value.  Specific procedures for transfer and utilization of sick leave days by family members shall be established by the Personnel and Finance Departments.
